Announcements April 11, 2016

·       The call back list for the Jr. Girls Soccer team is now posted in the gym hallway next to the athletic office.  If your name is on the list please listen for the end of day announcements to verify the time of the next tryout.

·       Choir, jazz band and concert band rehearsals are all cancelled this week.

·       Senior badminton practice today 2:30 until 4.

·       This is reminder to those members of the senior boys' soccer team who still need to pay their $15 activity fee, please bring your money to Mrs. Hyland in Prep 2 or to Room 236.

  • If we relied on final scores in game-play alone, the senior boys’ soccer Umbro Invitational tournament last Friday in Amherstburg would appear lacklustre, given that three of the five games the Villanova Wildcats played in resulted in a 0-0 tie.  However, the Wildcats had their defense ON the entire day and represented Villanova well as they went all the way to the finals, losing in a shoot-out against the Essex Red Raiders.
  • Their first game in the tournament was against rival Holy Names and outstanding performances by defenseman Joe Lappalainen and goalie Anthony Pedri left the Knights scoreless despite their efforts.
  • Their game against Riverside saw the same strong defensive action, with outstanding performance by Jacob Savoni who was determined not to be outrun by his opponents.  However, the Riverside Rebels got their break in the last 10 minutes of play to finish that game 1-0.
  • In the quarter-finals, the Wildcats played against a somewhat sluggish St. Patrick’s from Sarnia.  This allowed for some impressive offensive work on the Villanova end to finish the game 2-0 and earn their place in the semi-finals.  Goal-scorers were Frank Tamasovics and Shaun Langlois.
  • They were up against Holy Names in the semi-finals.  The Knights again put up a good offense but went home frustrated as several scoring opportunities were quashed by the now on-fire Wildcat defense and by goalie Pedri who added salt to their wounds by stopping that important first penalty kick in a shoot-out sending Villanova to the finals.
  • The final game against the Essex Raiders was played under the lights (and in a sea of snowflakes).  The Villanova Wildcats remained resolved despite extreme conditions and several injuries.  Both the offensive and defensive ends continued to work hard but once again the score remained at 0-0.  The penalty shot round went to 4 shots when the Essex goalie successfully put a stop to one of our kicks to finish the tournament.  Congratulations boys on representing Villanova well throughout the day!

·       To those students writing the Waterloo Math contests on Wednesday, you should have received a reminder slip from your homeroom teachers today with details about the contest.  Also, if you would like a hard copy of old contests for practice, see MissBatrusiunas in Room 233 or Mrs. Hyland in Room 236.  You can also access them online. See you Wednesday with your thinking caps on!

·       For the next two weeks, the Villanova Youth Troop will be selling daffodils in front of the cafeteria. For every $2.00 donated, students will have a chance to guess the number of daffodils in a jar. All of the funds generated will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The student who guesses the correct number of daffodils, or who is the closest, will win a pair of tickets to a Hedley concert at the WFCU Centre on April 26th.
